This is the first survey.

ETA: Where there's a scale for ranking, 1 is least important and 10 is most important. Thanks to those who pointed this out to me.

If you can, please use the comments to explain a little of your reasons for your answers. Detailed poll results are only available to me.

At this point, the question I felt was personally missing was "How much does nostalgia motivate your desire to visit Cardiff?"

Because that's what it is for me (of course), not the desire to play, but to engage in a past both fictional (the narrative in the show) and not (the existence of the show).

Edited at 2012-01-16 08:25 pm (UTC)

Nostalgia is a big motivator. It's strange to go back there and see how the city's changed, and know that the story stopped before some of the changes happened.

There is only one reason I would visit Cardiff. Torchwood and to visit the Shrine.

I have family in Wales but would only ever visit Caridiff for the above reason. I live in NZ so is on the other side of the world.

The shrine is a really interesting place to visit. Would you want to take something down there to leave?

The first answer, for me, was a little tricky, because Torchwood was only a small part of why I visited Cardiff. I didn't visit solely or even primarily because of it, though the fact that there were a few sites I wanted to check out did factor in. The primary reasons I wanted to visit were for "history geek" reasons (mainly castles, there); and another main reason I wanted to go was to visit the Doctor Who Close Up Exhibition in the Red Dragon Centre.

The castles are spectacular, aren't they? If they do a Torchwood exhibition, would you want to go to that?

Owing to family reasons, I tend to avoid Wales in general. I went to Cardiff for Blue Gillespie and related meet-ups. Whilst I like Cardiff, I don't feel a strong pull to it, and owing to the massive amounts of negative associations that I have with Wales (and the Welsh accent), it's not somewhere that I miss.

It's probably the only place in Wales that I'll willingly go to tho

The chance to meet up with people there is awesome. As are Blue Gillespie. It's a shame about the negative associations you have with it, though.

(Deleted comment)
Cardiff Castle is awesome, and Torchwood related! What else would you like to see there?

I first went to Cardiff for a Blue Gillespie gig, but that is related to Torchwood, and my first day there, the first thing I did was visit the water tower and jump up and down on a step. I now return to Cardiff often, but because I have fallen in love with the city itself and enjoy being there. But, part of that enjoyment also stems from meeting up with friends while I am there.

But I still like to spend time around the Bay and I still get a lot of enjoyment out of finding new TW locations I hadn't seen before.

There's something about that step, isn't there? It is a wonderful city too.

I wonder if you could share your list of locations? It's great to see where people have visited and what they've found.

One of my childhood mentors was Welsh, so a lot of my interest in the area stems from my regard for her and my interest in her stories. That Torchwood landed there just made it even more interesting.

It is a wonderful area. I'm glad that Torchwood landed there to promote it. Did the show reflect what you thought of the city, or was it different?

I'd like to visit Wales in general because of my interest in Welsh History, but Cardiff would be mainly because of TW.

Cardiff does have its own entity, doens't it? Is there anything you particularly want to see?

Torchwood isn't really a reason why I'd like to visit Cardiff. My reason for wanting to visit has more to do with the fact that it's part of Britain and I'd generally like to see more of Britain.

Britain would like to see more of you too :) Is there anything Torchwood-y you want to do in Cardiff, though?

Please forgive me for being stupid but is 1 the most important and 10 the least important on your survey? I'm assuming it is but as you don't state so in the question it isn't clear and if I'm marking something 'out of ten' if I like it obviously it will be graded with a higher number. To reduce the chance of anyone else being a bit confused, I'd suggest it would be a good thing to clarify the point. I will come back and answer the survey later.

I will explain some of the answers I will make now though...

I have previously visited Cardiff, before Roald Dahl Plas and the Millenium Centre were built and my only point of reference from then to now that I remember is the Pier Head building. Though I enjoyed the Castle (and also Castell Goch) there wasn't really anything that made me want to return specifically.

Torchwood changed that.

My next visit was planned in order to visit Torchwood locations with a friend who is also a fan. We'd wanted to go for a while but the perfect opportunity presented itself while John Barrowman was doing panto in Cardiff in 2009 - we got Torchwood and JB in one weekend! Since then, I've been back to Cardiff twice, adding a few more Torchwood locations to our 'places we've visited' each time though Torchwood was only part of the reason for each visit (Clic Sergent event with Ben Loyd Holmes and Ray Holman in 2010 and also 2 Blue Gillespie gigs over the same weekend in 2011 - I would never have given BG a listen if it wasn't for Gareth David Lloyd being the singer as they are generally 'not my thing' so you could say anything Blue Gillespie related is Torchwood related).

We always stay in the same B&B as the people who run it are Torchwood (and Doctor Who) fans.

I visited the Doctor Who exhibition while I was there in 2010 but only because my friend won the tickets at the Clic Sargent event!

I want to go back again this year, maybe with my car, so I can find a few more Torchwood locations that are maybe not easy to find by walking or using the bus.

1 is least important and 10 is most important. Sorry, I should have made that more clear.

Sounds like you've had a few fantastic trips to Cardiff with Torchwood. What are you hoping to do when you come back? Anything in particular, or just see what happens?

The first time I had a desire to visit Cardiff it was, of course, because of Torchwood. I wanted to see the filming locations. Then, I found out Blue Gillespie was playing (which is, of course, the band fronted by TW actor Gareth David-Lloyd) and thought it might be a good time to go.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Cardiff in March 2011, and dearly want to go again. This time, however, it's because I fell in love with the city, its people, and everything it has to offer.

Cardiff does catch you like that. I hope you get to go again. What was the highlight of your trip? (Blue Gillespie are the awesome. I haevn't had a chance to see them since before I went abroad, though)

I've never been to Cardiff exclusively because of Torchwood, more for work, social and educational reasons. However I tried to answer the survey bearing in mind how happy I felt just seeing the locations and being there. I went the first time during early series 2, which felt hopeful at the time...

Seeing the locations is amazing, isn't it? And wow, you went a lot earlier than I did. I didn't get to go until after COE :( Did you get to location spot for later episodes?

Yes, it would be helpful if you stated which end of the scale indicated which response, e.g. 10=most important 1=least important, etc.

Fixed now, thanks :) I should have thought about that before. it's all a learning process, I guess

the only reason i go to cardiff is and was because of Torchwood.
Because of torchwood i met an awesome group of people and had a TW gathering in Cardiff, to visit TW and DW filming locations, to go to the Ianto Shrine and have fun with friends.
the last time i went to Cardiff was because of TW in a way, as i went to see Blue Gillespie (GDL's band) i only know of that thru TW.)

actually thinking back... the first time i went to Cardiff was in 1999 and i was living in swansea at the time, me and my friend went cos we heard it had a Forbidden Planet. and Swansea didnt have a Sci Fi shop at the time. it was a good day trip, i bought an Angel cardboard cut out. so there is my one non torchwoody reason i went.

so there is an account of all the times and reasons i have been to Cardiff... (dunno if thats what u wanted...)

The gatherings have been great. Did you get to visit before COE, or was it all after?

Lovely icon too :D Team Gareth all the way

I have never been to Cardiff. I've never been to the UK. I've never been to any country other than my own and Canada.

That said, my lack of travel does not correlate directly to a lack of desire. Torchwood is my main draw to Cardiff, absolutely. I don't think I knew much about it beyond the vague existence of Wales. And all I knew about Wales was what I'd picked up through studying Tudor England.

That said, bits of the history relative to the British Monarchy would definitely be a draw for me, as would the filming of other British television shows (Doctor Who, Sherlock) in...well, in Wales, maybe not Cardiff specifically. I have no idea. See? I suck at locations.

So yeah, back to the original point, which is that Torchwood is my sole reason for wanting to visit Cardiff. I'll admit that it looks like a city I would enjoy otherwise, but so do many cities around the world.

Edited at 2012-01-16 11:29 pm (UTC)

Come to the UK. Come join us. Roadtrip!

Is there anything particular you want to do in Cardiff? There's so much to see there.

The main reason I would want to visit Cardiff is because of Torchwood, but it wouldn't be the only reason. I just want to see everything. I want to visit the castles, see the countryside, watch rugby (pref NZ V Wales, but not picky). TW would draw me there, though. I have to go to the Shrine. See the spots where filming took place. Watch Blue Gillespie perform - yeah, I know they're not TW, but it's because of TW that I know of them at all.

There is so much to see though, that I would never have known about if it weren't for TW - and DW.

I hope you get the chance to come over here and see it. What do you want to see most?

I visited Cardiff because of Torchwood. That was the initial idea. But of course I always travel with the thought of really educating myself about the history and the cities I see. So Torchwood was only the initial motivation and while we enjoyed visiting the bay and being geeky about it all, we also saw the city and visited other landmarks.

There's so much to see there, isn't there? Did you get to see a lot of the locations?

I live on the other side of the world (NZ) and when I get back to finish my tour of the UK and Europe (aborted in Jan 1988 due to broken leg skiing in Austria) Cardiff will be on my list of UK places to visit.

Torchwood would be a big part of that for me but I also really really really want to be there to see the All Blacks play Wales in rugby. Cardiff Arms park is gone now isn't it? Do they play in the Millenium Centre? I could see me there for a game geekily thinking "The Hub is underneath me."

Would also like to see the Who exhibition

The broken leg sucks :( I hope you get to come back soon.

They play at the Milennium Stadium up in the centre of town, I think. Nice boat ride from the Bay if the weather's nice.

When I first went to Cardiff when I was about 13, I think, I just said to my parents I wanted to go to Cardiff because of Doctor Who and Torchwood. Being in Britain we had done a lot of England, so my family were happy to go. The main motivation was for Doctor Who/Torchwood but we didn't solely to do stuff to do with that, we ended up doing a few castles and bits when we actually went. Would we have gone if it hadn't been for Doctor Who/Torchwood? Probably not. Did we just do Doctor Who/Torchwood stuff? No, we did a lot more things.

There's a lot to do and see there, isn't there? What was your favourite thing you did?

I am from Germany. I visited Cardiff in 2010 and 2011. My main reason each time was to go to the concert of John Barrowman, but even though he performed at many venues, including Royal Albert Hall in London, my friends and me chose Cardiff - of course because of the connection to "Torchwood" and also "Doctor Who". It was lovely to see the places from TV in real live, and I definitely will be back one day.

At the concert I met fans as far as from USA and Australia, so yes, that is a huge draw.

People come from so far away to see him, and it's always great to get the chance to get together. Did you see BluCougar in Cardiff last year? She came over from Australia from it.

First time I went to Cardiff was definitely Torchwood motivated - I met up with another fangirl and we did the sights, met up with other fangirl friends then saw JB at the Millenium Centre! A lot of Torchwood fun. We went to

Millenium Centre
Plass
Jumped on the step etc
Walked around Mermaid Quay (restaurant where Jack, Rose, 9 and Mickey go to)
The boardwalk (mmmm coffee hijack)
The "Tourist Office" door
National Museum of Wales (location for several eps of DW/TW)
The castle (where John Hart takes Jack)
DW Exhibition
We even found THE bridal shop where Ianto got the wedding dress!

Since then I've been back but for a concert with another friend who is a Welsh girl first and fangirl second so we were far more practical but I still kindof love the place. It will never be as special as it was that first time though with the perfect date, lovely (if freezing!) weather, and the series still fresh and vibrant. :)

You had a mega Torchwood trip. What was the best bit, do you think?

My sole reason for visiting Cardiff was after seeing it on TW. My best friend and I totally fell in love with the place, so much so that I even considered moving there!

I love how diverse everything is: the people, the social scene, the architecture.

The Bay is awesome. Every time we visit we find some treasure of a place we havent seen before.

Torchwood has a lot to answer for! It is a lovely place, isn't it? I've considered moving there myself. What are the best discoveries you've made, do you think?

I travel to Great Britain every few years. I'd always wanted to go to Wales but just not gotten around to it. Then came Torchwood! In 2010 I traveled to Wales and just saw other parts of Great Britain as pretty much an after thought. Cardiff isn't a top pick/location to visit in any of the guide books I used, but it was my primary tourism target because of Dr. Who and Torchwood. I saw the Dr. Who exhibit, The Wall, the Millenium Center, etc. I found myself spending extra time there just wandering around and resting.

I saw a few castles up north, but missed connections to the male choir practice and a few activities closer to Cardiff. I know I'll go back because I really liked it there and I just wish there was an established tour of Dr Who/Torchwood filming locations I could have taken.

I see Cardiff as a character in the Torchwood universe and Miracle Day kind of killed her off too. I missed her in what I managed to see of the 4th season. I'd watch almost any new sci-fi or other show coming out of there because I've come to appreciate Wales so much more since I began reading fanfiction based on actual Welsh mythology, history, and locations. My own research into these areas has been interesting because I'm a history geek at heart.

Cardiff is a great place, and it's a shame it's not in more of the guidebooks. It's great to see that more people are going there because of Torchwood. And there is a bus tour and a walking tour of locations now, so you definitely have to come back. Or I'll play tourguide for you.

Torchwood just isn't right anywhere else, is it?

I first visited Cardiff because of Torchwood, and I reflected that in my answers to the poll, but since that first time, I went back several times, for different reasons (mostly culture and the fact that I fell in love with the city and people !).

I still try to find a new Torchwood-related place to visit each time, though....

There's so much there to catch you. It's a great city. What's your favourite thing about it?

Glad to see I'm not the only non-UKer to respond to this survey! I have a great desire to visit the UK in general, not just because of Who & TW, although perhaps becoming interested in those shows has strengthened the urge by opening up my knowledge of the countries. I love the Welsh accent, and while I'd get a kick out of visiting Cardiff for TW purposes, I'd also love to see other parts of the country. Even though I don't think they filmed Countrycide in the Brecon Beacons, it sounds from what I've heard to be a nice spot, for example.
Good luck on your studies!

There's responses from all over the place! It's really lovely to see. Is there anything you particularly want to see there?
